The Epic List of National Drinks & World Beers!

Posted by on August 26, 2013

Okay people, this is a work in progress and I need everyone to chip in. I can’t try all the alcoholic drinks of the world myself. Though I am working on it.

The idea is to create the biggest, most badass list of national beers and beverages ever made. If you’re looking for something in particular, don’t let the list’s size daunt you. You can sort by country, by drink type, or whatever you like. Just click the headers along the top.

Suggestions in the comments, please!

Thanks to everyone who’s pitched in so far.

Some more drinks that sound foreign…but aren’t

In my travels I’ve come across many a drink with a worldly name, based on some exotic destination, yet actually invented and primarily consumed in the West. For example, America’s strange love-hate relationship with all-things-Russian – and in particular, vodka – has given us the…

  • White Russian
  • Black Russian
  • Moscow Mule

Also, if anyone made the mistake of thinking an Irish Car Bomb was actually a cocktail from Ireland, shame on you.

Euroshopper beers from Holland – they are so cheap :-)

    • RoyDuffield

How could I forget. 4€ for a crate of 24, minus 10 cents back for each bottle safely returned, equals less than seven cents for a bottle of beer…and that’s in a wealthy Western European nation. Nice!

  2. Laurence

Korea – Somek (소맥) – Soju and beer drunk together.

  3. graham askey

Here’s a round up of booze in the Caucasus. Georgia is piss artists heaven, they have everything and its dirt cheap (got 3l bottle of beer for 2 quid): probably the oldest wine making tradition in the world; loads of beers, too many to list so 3 popular ones are Kazbegi, Natakhtari, Zedazeni – all come in filtered and unfiltered versions, the former essentially lagers but the latter have more of a beer taste; also have malt beers; lethal spirit called cha cha made from grapes. Armenia beers:Gyumri, Kotayk (my pick as the best) ,Alexandrapol, Kilikia, Ararat. national spirit is Kognak -basically a version of cognac. Azerbaijan: beer Xirdalan. All three countries do fruit vodkas. Guide to W africa to follow at end of trip

    • RoyDuffield

Wow, someone’s been doing his homework! ;)

I read somewhere that they used to make the best Cognac in the world – even finer than the French, so the French got the name protected. It’s nice to hear they’ve found a new name for theirs, lol.

For Korea, add in these. They’re very well-known among Koreans and should be in the list together!

    – Makgeolli (막걸리): Korean rice wine. It can come in distilled, or undistilled, where undistilled Makgeolli comes as Seng-Makgeolli.

    – Baekseju (백세주): Literally meaning ‘100 years wine’, it is a rice gluten-based wine with honey, ginger, and etc.
But it is rather fruity compared to other Korean drinks along with Bokbunja.

    – Bokbunja (복분자): As a Korean raspberry wine, it has a largely tangy taste to it, and the vinegary sweet taste has some addiction to it. There are non-alcoholic varieties, however.

For famous brands, Korean beer consists of OB Beer, Hite Beer, and Cass, and soju consists of Chamisul and Chum Churum.

    • Roy

Thanks! I’ll add these as soon as I can. Actually, some of these sound pretty good, I’m going to run them by my Korean pals and see if I can procure some ASAP. ;-) Cheers!
